Beginner's Guide: Survive Your First Days in Dragonwilds

A step-by-step beginner guide for RuneScape: Dragonwilds — first hours, first tools, first base, first spell, and how to avoid an early grave.

Your first hours in RuneScape: Dragonwilds set the tone for everything that follows. Ashenfall looks welcoming in its southern meadows, but hunger, thirst, wandering dragons and your own ambition can each end a run early. This walkthrough walks you through a safe, efficient opening: what to do first, what to build first, and which mistakes cost new players the most time.

Gathering is your first job — every skill you swing at levels up.

Hour one: gather everything

When you wake on the southern coast of Brynmoor, do not rush north. Your first job is raw materials:

  • Ash and oak logs from any tree — punch smaller saplings or chop with a crude axe.
  • Stones and boulders scattered across the meadows.
  • Fiber from picking bushes and ground plants, used for rope and cloth.
  • Food — pick berries, hunt small game or scoop eggs before your hunger bar starts biting.

Every action levels a skill automatically. Woodcutting levels as you chop, Mining as you pick, and so on. There is no manual XP allocation to worry about; you level what you use. That means the best beginner habit is simple: touch every resource node you walk past, even when you do not need it yet.

Follow the first quests

The opening quests — First Steps and Getting Started — are short tutorials that reward essential crafting recipes and introduce you to the settlement that anchors the early game. Complete them before free-roaming; they unlock the workstations your first base needs. Our First Steps walkthrough covers the exact steps.

Build a starter base near the meadows

Once you have wood, stone and fiber, place your first Construction pieces. A functional starter camp needs only four things:

  1. A campfire — cooking food multiplies its value and unlocks better recipes.
  2. A chest — death in Dragonwilds drops your goods; a stash point near your respawn softens the blow.
  3. Walls and a door — even a dirt-simple hut keeps night creatures and weather off your back.
  4. A bed or bedroll — set your respawn point before you ever wander past the treeline.

Do not overbuild yet. Your first base is a beachhead, not a mansion: keep it small, keep it near water and wood, and expect to relocate as you push into harder regions. Our base building 101 guide covers layout planning in depth.

Watch your four survival bars

Dragonwilds tracks four drains on your body, and ignoring any of them ends runs:

  • Health — obvious, but note it does not regenerate freely without food or rest early on.
  • Stamina — every swing, sprint and spell draws from it; a drained stamina bar leaves you defenseless.
  • Hydration — drink from clean water sources before the bar empties; dehydration degrades everything you do.
  • Sustenance — hunger. Cooked meals beat raw food every time, so cook at the campfire whenever possible.

Rest at your bed or by the fire to bank a rested bonus, which improves your regeneration for a while. For the full mechanics, see Survival Basics.

Unlock your first spells

Magic is not a late-game class choice — everyone casts. The Rune Altar converts rune essence (mined from essence nodes and earned through quests) into the runes that fuel spells, and early quests like Rune Mysteries open the whole system up.

Two early spells change how you play forever:

  • Rocksplosion detonates large ore nodes from a distance, showering you with metal without a pickaxe grind.
  • Windstep hurls you across gaps, opening shortcuts and escape routes that walkers never see.

Gear up before you push north

Before leaving Brynmoor's safety, craft a full set of bronze gear: a melee weapon of your choice, a bow if you favor ranged, and armor pieces from the Armour Bench. Enchanting a weapon with an elemental effect at the Mystic Forge gives you a cheap edge against the tougher fauna up north.

Mind the dragons

From your first day you will see dragons overhead. Early on they are weather, not combat — a green dragon breathing down a goblin camp is a gift, because it does your work for you. Learn their patrol patterns, stay out of landing zones, and never carry raw meat stacks into open meadows if you can help it; some predators track the smell of an easy meal.

Common first-week mistakes

  1. Wandering north underprepared. Ghornfell's wildlife is a hard gear check; respect the boundary.
  2. Eating raw food. It barely sustains you; a campfire turns scraps into real meals.
  3. Ignoring hydration. New players fixate on hunger and die of thirst.
  4. Skipping the Rune Altar. Magic multiplies every other system; unlock it early.
  5. Overbuilding too soon. A huge first base wastes resources you will need to relocate.
  6. Fighting everything. Running away is a legitimate tactic, and cheaper than armor repairs.
