Ashenfall World Guide: Every Region and What to Expect

A complete tour of Ashenfall in RuneScape: Dragonwilds — all five regions, their subzones, danger curves, resources and progression order.
Ashenfall is the forgotten continent where RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes place — a land vented by the Elder Gods to contain their world's wild anima, now ruled by awakened dragons. The continent is divided into five major territories, and the entire game is essentially a climb up their danger curve. This guide maps them all, explains how they connect, and tells you what to bring to each.

How the continent fits together
Geographically, Ashenfall reads like a spiral of escalating hostility:
- Brynmoor — the gentle south, where every expedition begins.
- Ghornfell — the northern wilds, one tier harder everywhere.
- Fellhollow — the far north, a haunted endgame territory.
- Dowdun Reach — the mountainous delve dividing north from far south.
- Umbral Sands — the far southern desert, east of Ghornfell's wastes.
The deeper you push toward the continent's heart, the stronger the Anima Twist warps the land — and the deadlier its creatures become. Progression is not strictly linear; side content crisscrosses regions, but gear checks keep most players moving south to north first, then into the mountain and the sands.
Region-by-region overview
Brynmoor — the gateway
Brynmoor's southern territories hold Temple Woods, Bramblemead Valley and the Whispering Swamp. This is tutorial country: gentle wildlife, abundant wood, stone and fiber, three early dragonkin vaults, and the quest hub that anchors your first dozens of hours. Its dangers are real but fair — goblin patrols, lone wolves and the occasional curious dragon overhead.

Ghornfell — the northern wilds
Ghornfell contains the Fractured Plains, Bloodblight Swamp and the storm-lashed Stormtouched Highlands. The tier jumps noticeably: tougher fauna, poisoned swamps, lightning storms that interact with standing water, and metals worth the trip — copper and iron country. Four vaults sit in its borders, and the region's gear checks define the mid-game.

Fellhollow — the haunted far north
Fellhollow is Ashenfall's gothic crown: the Bleakfields Valley, Forgotten Temple, Dragon's Run, the autumn-red Emberwood, Witchwillow Range, Hope's Fall, the frozen Lake of Lost Souls, Silverthorn Keep and the mining pass of Coalridge. Undead rule the territory — skeletal legions, rot-sworn necromancers and the ghosts of a fallen realm — and its vaults are the hardest of the standard progression.

Dowdun Reach — the mountain delve
Dowdun Reach is different in kind: a vast underground-and-cliffside complex of dwarf-forgotten halls, with subzones like The Approach, The Courtyard, The Nexus, The Library, The Grand Hall, The Garrison, The Pastures, The Menagerie and The Bastion. It plays as one long dungeon — traps, engineered corridors and dragonkin architecture — and houses the story's deep lore.

Umbral Sands — the desert of pyramids
The far south breaks the mold with open desert: the Alcarrid Oasis, the Dunes of Uzzer, the Manafem Plains and the Burning Spire. Heat strains your hydration, pyramids hide their own vaults, and the local wildlife — including the region's red dragon — hits hard. Added in the June 2026 update, it is home to some of the game's best mounts and late-game crafting.

Travel tips for the whole continent
- Build forward camps. A bed, chest and campfire at each region's edge converts death walks into strolls.
- Mark everything. Essence nodes, vault doors and water sources on the map pay for themselves weekly.
- Watch the skies. Dragons cross region borders; a Brynmoor meadow can host a Fellhollow-grade problem.
- Gear before geography. Each region assumes roughly the previous region's best gear; skipping tiers is how graveyards fill.
- Eat regionally. Every biome's cooking ingredients beat carried rations eventually — fish the lakes, hunt the plains, gather the oases.
The Anima Twist and why regions feel different
Wild anima concentrates toward the continent's heart, which is why each territory feels magically "off" in its own way: luminous fauna in the swamps, storm-charged highlands, ghost-light auroras over Fellhollow. Mechanically, it means later regions demand more than tougher gear — they demand the magic utility (shelter, cleansing, teleport) that earlier regions merely rewarded.
