First Steps is the opening quest of RuneScape: Dragonwilds — the quest that turns a shipwrecked survivor into a functioning adventurer. It introduces the game's three tutorial mentors, hands you your first tools and spells, and points you toward the story that eventually leads to the Dragon Queen. This walkthrough covers every step, the rewards, and the shortcuts most new players miss.

First Steps is the gateway quest: Getting Started, Ratcatcher, Rune Mysteries and later Dragon Slayer all hang off its completion, so finish it before free-roaming.

Step 1 — Speak to the Wise Old Man in the Temple

Your character wakes in Temple Woods, and the temple on the hill is your first destination. Inside waits the Wise Old Man — a face RuneScape veterans will recognize — who explains the situation: a dragon threatens the expedition, and you need training before you can do anything about it.

He offers to walk you through the basics. Accept the tutorial. Technically you can refuse, skip the training chain, and meet him later in Bramblemead Village to finish the quest — but the tutorial is short, and skipping it means learning the game's systems with no recipes, no tools and no spells. Refusing is a speedrunner's choice, not a beginner's.

Step 2 — The tutorial chain (three mentors)

Accepting the tutorial chains three short training quests, each teaching one pillar of the game:

Doric — building and processing

The dwarf Doric, waiting just outside the temple, teaches you the Construction and processing systems: how to place stations, how the building interface works, and how raw materials become usable goods. This segment hands you the fundamentals of every base you will ever build. His full lesson is the Getting Started quest.

Vannaka — hunting, fighting and cooking

The slayer master Vannaka, camped south of the windmill, teaches survival: hunt the local giant rats, cook what you kill at a campfire, and learn which end of the weapon points at the enemy. This is the Ratcatcher quest — bring the meat in raw and leave with cooked food and your first real weapons.

Zanik — magic and runes

The adventurer Zanik, waiting along the road east of Vannaka, introduces the magic system: mining rune essence, building a Rune Altar, and crafting your first air and astral runes. That's the Rune Mysteries quest, and it unlocks the spellbook that changes how you gather forever.

When Zanik finishes with you, she sends you back to the Wise Old Man.

Step 3 — Finish in Bramblemead Village

The quest ends in Bramblemead Village — find the Wise Old Man on the first floor of a ruined building at the far end of the village. Report in, and he'll point you at the next step of your adventure: the hunt for General Velgar that begins the Dragon Slayer arc.

Congratulations — quest complete, and the Tome of Runecrafting — Vol 1 is yours.

Rewards and why they matter

The physical reward is modest — a single tome — but the real payout is the unlocked chain:

  • Tools and weapons from Vannaka's segment (stone logging axe and stone dagger).
  • A stone pickaxe plus your first rune stockpile from Zanik's segment (air and astral runes).
  • The full recipe foundation — stations, campfire, Rune Altar — from Doric's.
  • Access to Dragon Slayer, which is the door to everything else.

Tips for a smooth run

  1. Gather on the walk. Ash logs and stones between the temple and the windmill feed all three tutorial segments; arrive stocked and you'll never back-track.
  2. Claim your bed. Doric's building lesson is the natural moment to place your first bed roll — do it, and every future death gets cheaper.
  3. Read the Rune Altar mini-game. Zanik's segment teaches the timing conversion; a few well-timed clicks now banks extra runes for days.
  4. Talk to everyone twice. The mentors' final dialogues contain the quest handoffs; leaving early strands the chain.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the tutorial quests out of order? The chain enforces its order: Getting Started → Ratcatcher → Rune Mysteries. Each mentor sends you to the next.

I refused the tutorial — can I go back? Yes. Speak to the Wise Old Man again (he's in Bramblemead Village after the opening) and you can take the training quests whenever you like.

Where exactly is Bramblemead Village? Central Bramblemead Valley, the ruined settlement in the middle of the map's starting region — the same village where the Wise Old Man relocates after the intro.
