Complete General Velgar boss guide — the challenge horn, poison breath and meteor barrages, phase strategy and rewards for Dragonwilds' first dragon boss.

General Velgar — the Big High War God himself — is RuneScape: Dragonwilds' first proper dragon boss and the final duel of the Dragon Slayer quest. He is also a recurring world threat: long before you're ready, his poison breath and meteor barrages will ruin an unguarded afternoon in the wild. This guide covers both versions of the fight, and how to win the one that matters.

Knights stand their ground as Velgar roars fire beside a keep
The goblins call him their god. Your job is to disagree, loudly.

Who Velgar is

Velgar began as a dragonkin beast of burden — hauling stone for the architect Brakka — before war gave him a stage. His brutality in the Human-Garou War was so absolute that Bandos himself descended to wrestle him bare-handed. Bandos nearly won; Velgar answered by calling a poison-filled rock out of the sky and onto the god's head, then beat him so badly that the goblins changed religions on the spot. They have worshipped him as the Big High War God ever since. Today he serves as one of Queen Kuldra's generals — and his lair, Velgar's Rise, is an old dragonkin tower in the Fractured Plains.

Step one: the challenge horn

Velgar's arena is gated by a summon item: the challenge horn. The recipe — recovered from dragonkin documents — calls for a dragon tooth carved with dragonkin sigils and metal wire laced in a lattice formation. The Dragon Slayer walkthrough covers gathering the tooth; the crafting itself is a blacksmith-tier job. Craft the horn, sound it at the Rise, and the general answers personally.

The fight: three moves and a temper

Velgar's kit is simple, huge and honest:

  1. Poison breath. A cone sweep that leaves lingering poison clouds. The counter is geometry: strafe through the start of the cone, never stand in what it leaves behind. His poison immunity means he's the only one who benefits from the ground he poisons.
  2. Meteor barrage. He calls falling fire on marked ground — glowing impact zones give you a second to move. Keep sprinting between casts; standing still is the only way this move kills you.
  3. Melee sweeps and bites. Enormous reach, long recoveries. This is your income: every sweep that misses is a free punish window on his flanks.

Phase strategy

  • Opening (100–70%): Establish the arena's rhythm — he opens with breath, then barrages. Circle wide, land ranged or magic chip damage, and learn his turn speed. He cannot track a strafing target and cast at the same time.
  • Mid (70–35%): The combinations begin — breath into barrage into bite. Your job is discipline: dodges only on telegraphs, punish only confirmed recoveries, heal only behind pillars. The arena's columns block his line-of-sight; use them as safe reloads.
  • Close (35–0%): He gets faster and the barrages denser. Save your burst cooldowns and control spells for this phase, keep to the arena's edge, and remember the golden rule of dragon fights: the ground is lava — poison clouds, meteor marks and his landing zone all stack.

Loadout that wins

  • Iron-tier armour minimum, shield if you melee. His sweeps one-shot bronze.
  • Ranged or magic as your damage core — his melee reach punishes meleers who overstay; distance damage turns the fight into a patience exam.
  • No poison, no burn enchants — he's immune to both. Bring air, earth or plain steel.
  • Control spells (Snare) for the close phase, Magical Mending or food for the mid-fight top-ups.
  • Full vitals and a rested bonus at the horn — the fight is long for a first dragon.

The wild Velgar (and why he found you at level 12)

Outside the arena, Velgar appears as a world event — strafing expeditions with the same poison breath and meteor barrages. The survival playbook:

  1. Break line-of-sight immediately — rocks and ruins block both his breath and his targeting.
  2. Never outrun a barrage in a straight line. Zigzag; the marks chase your last position, not your next.
  3. Let him finish. Wild Velgar is weather, not a duel — he's usually working on the goblins. Let the professionals (anyone, at this stage) handle it and loot the aftermath.

Rewards and what next

The first kill completes Dragon Slayer and pays out mid-game gear recipes and story progress; repeat kills (new horn, new instance) farm his drop table for dragon materials the endgame's smithing wants. The campaign's road then bends north — toward Fellhollow, the undead, and Velgar's fellow general Imaru (guide here).

Frequently asked questions

Is Velgar required to finish the campaign? Yes — Dragon Slayer is the gateway to the northern arc; Velgar falls or the story pauses at his tower.

Can I fight him before the quest sends me? Craft the horn early if you like; the arena checks your gear harder than your confidence. Power level 4 means iron kit.

What's the single best counter? Strafe discipline. Every one of his attacks punishes standing still; every recovery rewards movement. Win the footwork duel and the god loses his divinity.
