Full Rune Mysteries walkthrough for RuneScape: Dragonwilds — gather essence, build the Rune Altar, craft air and astral runes, unlock your spellbook.
Rune Mysteries closes Dragonwilds' tutorial chain by opening its signature system: magic. Zanik — the adventurer, the dorgeshuun hero, and in this world your rune-crafting instructor — walks you from "essence is a rock" to "you are now a spellcaster" in one short quest. This is the route, the rewards, and what the quest quietly sets up for the rest of the game.

Quest overview
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Start point | Speak to Zanik, east of Vannaka along the road to Bramblemead Village |
| Type | Primary quest (tutorial) |
| Requirements | Ratcatcher |
| Required items | 50 ash logs, 12 stones, rune essence (4 for the altar; gather 10 to be safe) |
| Reward | Stone pickaxe, 50 air runes, 50 astral runes, Tome of Woodcutting — Vol 1 |
Step 1 — Speak to Zanik
From Vannaka's camp, walk east along the road toward Bramblemead Village. Zanik waits by the roadside — white hair, better weapons and a much more interesting curriculum. She introduces the idea that fuels the whole game: rune essence, raw crystallized anima, can be shaped into runes that power spells.
First, she wants firewood. Gather 50 ash logs and talk to her again. Yes, fifty — this is a Woodcutting lesson wearing a magic quest's coat, and the reward tome makes the intent explicit. The Temple Woods meadows around the road refill fast; one circuit of the treeline plus your Ratcatcher stockpile usually covers it.
Step 2 — Mine rune essence at the geysers
Zanik teaches Axtral Projection — the spell-craft behind runes — and hands you a stone pickaxe. Your target: the rune essence geysers, bubbling anima springs marked by floating crystal rocks around them.
Two things make essence mining unusual:
- The crystal rocks fight back — sort of. They're struck down with ranged or magic attacks, not melee swings. Shoot or blast the crystals around the geyser, then pick up what falls.
- A pickaxe is still required for the essence itself — the stone pickaxe from the quest is your ticket, and the first of many mining upgrades.
Gather at least 10 rune essence even though the build only needs 4: essence is the game's universal ammunition, and the walk back is boring.
Step 3 — Build the Rune Altar
With 12 stones and 4 rune essence in the pack, open the build menu's Crafting tab and place a Rune Altar near your camp. This unassuming stone is about to become the most valuable square meter of your base — it converts essence into every rune your spellbook will ever burn. Full details of what it unlocks live in our Runecrafting guide.
Step 4 — Craft air and astral runes
Interact with the altar and craft your first two rune types:
- Air runes — the bread-and-butter element; a component in many spell recipes and the workhorse of early casting.
- Astral runes — the utility element that powers Axtral Projection and other utility magic.
The altar's conversion has a light timing mini-game — hit the prompts well and each essence stretches further. It's the same interface you'll use for the rest of the game, so building good habits now is free money later.
Step 5 — Report to Zanik, graduate to the Wise Old Man
Return to Zanik with your freshly crafted runes. She inspects your work, considers you officially dangerous to the local wildlife, and sends you back to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village — which completes the tutorial chain and opens the next act: the hunt for General Velgar in Dragon Slayer.
Congratulations — quest complete, spellbook unlocked.
Rewards, ranked by real value
- The Rune Altar recipe — permanent infrastructure for your entire magic economy.
- 50 air + 50 astral runes — a genuine head start; that's hours of early casting you don't have to mine.
- Stone pickaxe — doubles as your general mining upgrade.
- Tome of Woodcutting — Vol 1 — the XP book that repays those 50 logs.
Why this is the most important tutorial quest
Every system that makes Dragonwilds Dragonwilds flows through the altar: Rocksplosion mining, Windstep traversal, combat spells, teleports, healing. Players who skip the tutorial chain inevitably return to this exact spot a week later, hat in hand. The quest is short, the rewards are real, and the skill it teaches — essence logistics — is the difference between a spellbook and a paperweight. The Anima & Magic Basics guide covers the big picture; this quest is where you learn it by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Can I melee the essence crystals? No — they only break to ranged or magic attacks. If you have neither yet, Zanik's lesson provides what you need; otherwise any bow or spell works.
Where are the essence geysers? Marked during the quest in the Temple Woods area — follow the objective marker. Afterward, geyser clusters appear across all regions and become routine stops.
How many essence should I keep mining after the quest? Keep 20–50 raw essence banked at all times. Runes are spent faster than they're crafted whenever you're actually adventuring — the reserve is what keeps Windstep available for emergencies.
