Fellhollow Guide: Ashenfall's Haunted Far North

Fellhollow explained — Dragonwilds' undead far north: Bleakfields, Emberwood, Silverthorn Keep, the Lake of Lost Souls and its three hardest vaults.

Fellhollow is Ashenfall's far north — a haunted territory of ruined keeps, blood-red forests and legions of the dead. It is the hardest of the game's surface regions, the home stretch of the standard vault progression, and the storytelling high point of the campaign. This guide walks its subzones, its dangers and its rewards.

The subzones

Fellhollow packs nine named areas into its cold borders:

  • Bleakfields Valley — the grey entry valley; skeletal patrols and the region's front door.
  • Forgotten Temple — a ruined holy site claimed by the dead; lore-rich and loot-rich.
  • Dragon's Run — the dragon corridor; exactly what it sounds like.
  • Emberwood — the autumn-red forest where living trees burn eternal; home of the Kalistrakthen Kara vault.
  • Witchwillow Range — the witch-marked highlands of covens and charms.
  • Hope's Fall — a ruined fortification with a story in its name.
  • Lake of Lost Souls — the frozen lake at the heart of the region; two of its hardest vaults flank its shores.
  • Silverthorn Keep — the fallen keep that anchors the region's main storyline.
  • Coalridge Pass — the mining pass to the south, rich in coal and ambushes.

Why Fellhollow feels different

Every prior region tested your gear; Fellhollow tests your economy. The undead do not rout, do not flee, and often do not stop at death — skeletal warriors reform, necromancers raise what you kill, and attrition kills as many expeditions as combat does. Successful runs here are built on supplies: food, essence, ammunition and a forward camp within respawn distance.

Vault progression

Fellhollow hosts the last three standard-progression vaults:

Order Vault Location Power Signature threat
8 Kalistrakthen Kara Emberwood 5 Rat King and Vault Striker
9 Skekven Kara East of the Lake of Lost Souls 5 Skeletal hoplites; Vault Overlord
10 Vekchenven Kara West of the Lake of Lost Souls 5 Rotsworn necromancers; dragon wolves

These are the deepest standard vaults — full of trap families you have met, layered with new combinations, and ending in the best recipe rewards of the surface game. Full routes in the Fellhollow & Umbral Vaults walkthrough.

The undead problem, solved

Four tools break Fellhollow's difficulty curve:

  1. Fire. Skeletal foes burn; enchanted weapons and fire spells multiply your damage in exactly the right region.
  2. Kiting corridors. Undead legions shamble; streets, gates and keep courtyards turn hordes into queues.
  3. Necromancer priority. Kill the raisers first or every kill is temporary. Ranged and Snare spells earn their essence here.
  4. Anti-attrition supplies. Double the food you think you need; the dead do not drop lunches.

Quests and story beats

Fellhollow carries the campaign's emotional weight:

  • The Silverthorn Keep arc — the fallen realm's story and the road toward the Dragon Queen.
  • Withering Heights — the region's flagship primary quest and one of the game's best hours; full route in the Withering Heights walkthrough.
  • Even More Restless Ghosts and The Wild Hunt — the region's signature side quests, grim and generous; indexed in the Side Quests Hub.
  • Letters for the Dead — the postman's grim rounds; a fan favorite. Postie Pete's route is covered in the side quest hub as well.

Gathering and economy

Fellhollow pays the endgame's bills:

  • High-tier ores and coal — Coalridge Pass and the keep's mines.
  • Emberwood drops — the burning forest's unique components feed top-tier crafting.
  • Vault rewards — the three vaults' recipe chests include the region's best armour and weapon lines.
  • Undead components — necromantic reagents that the desert's alchemists pay well for.

Survival tactics for the far north

  1. Base at the pass. A forward camp in Coalridge or Bleakfields keeps respawn walks short and warm.
  2. Travel by day. The region's nights are darker and its spawns bolder; plan loops that end at your fire.
  3. Never fight on the lake ice. Dodges shorten, chases lengthen, and the lake remembers.
  4. Save Dragon's Run for last. The dragon corridor is the region's capstone threat; enter it with the vaults cleared and the keep behind you.

After Fellhollow

With the three vaults cleared and Silverthorn's story told, two roads remain: the mountain depths of Dowdun Reach and the desert pyramids of the Umbral Sands. The Dragon Queen's shadow falls across both — the boss hub has the strategies for the road's end.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fellhollow solo-viable? Yes, but slowly. Solo players should clear vaults one at a time with forward camps between them; groups can chain runs.

What gear tier should I bring? The Ghornfell vaults' full recipe set — Paladin plate or better, an enchanted weapon, and a stocked spellbar.

Where are the region's vault entrances? Two flank the frozen lake (east and west shores) and one burns inside Emberwood; the vaults walkthrough has exact approaches.
