Ghornfell Guide: Fractured Plains, Bloodblight Swamp and Stormtouched Highlands

A complete guide to Ghornfell — Dragonwilds' northern wilds: metals, four dragonkin vaults, poison swamp survival and storm tactics.

Ghornfell is where RuneScape: Dragonwilds stops being a tutorial and starts being a survival game. The northern wilds hold the continent's serious metals, its first poisoned swamp, and weather that will kill you as readily as the wildlife. Come with bronze, leave with iron — this guide covers everything the region demands.

The Bloodblight Swamp's rot runs deep — and so does its treasure.

The three territories

  • Fractured Plains — the rocky eastern approach: shattered ground, wind-carved ridges, and the region's richest metal nodes. Two vaults (Takla Kara and Skeklac Kara) anchor its progression.
  • Bloodblight Swamp — the festering lowland where necrotic energy left by Imaru's curse still pools. Rotridden wildlife, zogres and the Plague King's brood guard its vault (Kletterbuja Kara) and its recipe loot.
  • Stormtouched Highlands — the lightning-lashed high ground. Standing water, charged storms and the Chaktan Kara vault; bring insulated thinking and dry boots.

Together they form the game's mid-game spine: four of the twelve dragonkin vaults, the iron economy, and the quest chains that open Fellhollow.

What to gather

Ghornfell pays out the mid-game toolkit:

  • Iron ore — the reason you came; the plains' exposed veins and cave systems feed the entire next gear tier.
  • Coal — smelting at scale; stockpile whenever a node cluster appears.
  • Clay — swamp and riverbed deposits for advanced construction and the Kiln.
  • Swamp reagents — the Bloodblight's fungal and alchemical drops feed cooking and crafting recipes found nowhere else.
  • Blurite — the rare ore found inside Takla Kara's vault; a unique deposit worth the dive for the gear it unlocks.

Before you cross the border

Ghornfell's gear check is real. Arrive with:

  1. A full bronze kit, enchanted if possible — the plains' predators punish half-loads.
  2. A ranged option — bow or spells; swamp and highland fights reward keeping distance.
  3. Antidote thinking — food heals, but poison ticks through it; plan short fights and clean retreats in the Bloodblight.
  4. A forward camp at the border — bed, chest, campfire. Death walks in the north are long otherwise.

Vault progression in Ghornfell

Four vaults sit inside the region, in recommended order:

Order Vault Subzone Power Signature threat
4 Takla Kara Fractured Plains 3 Vault Incinerator; blurite ore deposit inside
5 Skeklac Kara Fractured Plains (Ashien's Watch) 4 Vault Corruptor; putrid rat swarms
6 Kletterbuja Kara Bloodblight Swamp 3 Plague King; poison trap families
7 Chaktan Kara Stormtouched Highlands 4 Vault Pyroclast; fire and lightning hazards

The full routes, traps and rewards are in the Ghornfell Vaults walkthrough. Takla and Skeklac are the priority — their recipes (including the Paladin armour set and Wild Scout's Shortbow) carry players through the rest of the mid-game.

Surviving the Bloodblight Swamp

The swamp is the region's rite of passage:

  • Fight short, retreat clean. Poison stacks do not care about your DPS; end fights fast and detox by fire.
  • Walk the high ground. Invisible rot pools dot the low trails; watch where the wildlife refuses to stand.
  • Hunt the zogres carefully. They drop what necromancers want; they also hit like a falling tree. Kite, do not trade.
  • Mark the vault door early. Kletterbuja Kara's entrance is easier to find from the ridge than from inside the mist.

Storm tactics for the Highlands

The Stormtouched Highlands turn weather into an enemy:

  • Lightning strikes standing water — including puddles you are dodging through; cross wet ground between strikes, not during them.
  • Metal gear attracts attention in the worst way during storms; plan cover-to-cover movement when the sky goes dark.
  • The vault is the shelter. Chaktan Kara's interior is storm-proof; when the weather peaks, dungeon-delve instead of dying dramatically.

Quests that anchor the region

Ghornfell's quest slate builds toward Fellhollow:

  • The northern side slate — the wilds' detours punch above their weight: Granite Mauled, Heartstrings, Dog Days, A Room With A Garou, Animal Magnetism, A Melody Remembered and the highlands' Highlighting the Problem; all indexed in the Side Quests Hub.

When Ghornfell is done

You are ready for Fellhollow when iron plates your whole kit, the four vaults are cleared, and the northern side lines have paid out their recipes. The far north assumes all of it — and then adds undead. The Fellhollow guide takes over from here, with the region's flagship quest — Withering Heights — waiting at its heart.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip the swamp and do the highlands first? Technically yes; practically the swamp's recipes and Kletterbuja's rewards make the highlands easier. Take the region in order.

Where is the best iron farming? The Fractured Plains' ridge veins and the cave mouths near Ashien's Watch; bring a pickup-loop route and Rocksplosion runes.

Do I need anti-poison gear? No dedicated set is required, but plan around poison: short fights, fire nearby, and food hotkeyed. The swamp respects preparation, not gear scores.
