Full walkthrough for the Getting Started quest in RuneScape: Dragonwilds — Doric's station-building tutorial, plus prep for the mentor chain ahead.

Getting Started is the second quest in Dragonwilds' tutorial chain, and it belongs to Doric — the gruff dwarf who teaches you that raw logs and stones are merely potential. This quest introduces the building system and your first processing stations, and it hands you off to Vannaka for combat training. Here is the complete route.

Quest overview

Detail Info
Start point Speak to Doric, just outside the Temple in Temple Woods
Type Primary quest (tutorial)
Requirements First Steps
Focus Building and processing stations
Reward Foundation recipes for stations and construction basics

Step 1 — Find Doric outside the temple

After accepting the Wise Old Man's tutorial in First Steps, step outside the temple and you cannot miss Doric — he's positioned right on the temple's doorstep for exactly this purpose. Talk to him to open the building lesson.

If you're returning to the chain later (say, after refusing the tutorial and exploring a while), the quest picks up in the same place: the temple in Temple Woods.

Step 2 — Learn the building system

Doric's lesson walks you through the Construction interface for the first time:

  • Foundations, walls and ceilings — the structural kit that turns materials into shelter. You'll place each piece yourself, which is the fastest way to learn the snap system.
  • The build menu's categories — structure, crafting stations, furniture and storage. Everything you'll ever build lives in these tabs.
  • Free-placement versus snapping — stations can go almost anywhere on flat ground; structural pieces prefer each other's company.

Take the lesson seriously. It's short, but the muscle memory — rotating pieces, confirming footprints, backing out of a bad snap — pays off every single session afterward. Our Base Building 101 goes deeper if you want the full theory.

Step 3 — Processing stations 101

The second half of the quest is Doric's true love: turning raw into refined. You'll set up your first processing stations — the ancestors of the furnace-and-bench sprawl your endgame base will become:

  1. Gather the raw inputs — ash logs and stones from the temple's surroundings are all the early stations need.
  2. Place the starter stations — follow the quest markers; each station demonstrates one processing chain (logs to planks-style components, stone to cut stone).
  3. Run each machine once — the quest wants to see you actually process, not just build. Feed the stations and collect the outputs.

These stations are the tutorial-tier versions of the full crafting chain — the Blacksmith Bench, Furnace and friends that come later. The full station catalog is in our crafting stations guide.

Step 4 — On to Vannaka

With stations humming, Doric declares you fit to learn violence and sends you to Vannaka, the slayer master camped south of the windmill in Bramblemead Valley. That begins the Ratcatcher quest — bring food, because Vannaka's version of a pop quiz is live rats.

Prep tips before you leave Doric

The space between Doric's lesson and Vannaka's camp is the game's gentlest gathering zone. Stack these before you go:

  • Ash logs (aim for 50+) — Ratcatcher and Rune Mysteries both eat logs; gathering now saves two trips later.
  • Stones (a dozen or more) — same reason; campfires and altars are hungry.
  • Fiber and food — pick bushes and hunt anything small and foolish on the road.
  • Claim a bed roll. If you built even a minimal shelter during the lesson, place and claim a bed before traveling. Death before Bramblemead is rare, but insurance is cheap.

Common snags (and fixes)

  • Can't place a station? You're on a slope or overlap — open the build menu, rotate or nudge, and watch the footprint color; green means go.
  • Missing materials mid-lesson? Everything the quest needs spawns within sight of the temple; the nearby woods edge is deliberately generous.
  • Quest marker vanished? Open the quest log and re-select Getting Started — markers follow the tracked quest, and the tutorial chain tracks one step at a time.

Why this quest matters long-term

Every station Doric teaches is a permanent recipe, and the building fluency you practice here is the same interface you'll use for walled compounds, desert oases camps and delve forward-bases. Players who rush through the placements often rebuild everything twice; ten careful minutes here is the cheapest speed-up in the game.

Frequently asked questions

Is Getting Started skippable? The Wise Old Man lets you decline the whole tutorial, but Doric's recipes gate comfortable play — every later station builds on this lesson. Do it.

Where does the chain go next? Vannaka and Ratcatcher (combat and cooking), then Zanik and Rune Mysteries (magic), then back to the Wise Old Man — after which Dragon Slayer opens the real hunt.

Does my starter shelter count as a base? Yes — anything you place persists. Many players' first "real" base starts as Doric's homework, expanded week by week.
