What RuneScape: Dragonwilds is, how its survival crafting loop works, and what the 1.0 release adds to Jagex's co-op adventure on Ashenfall.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is an open-world co-op survival crafting game built by Jagex, the studio behind RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. Instead of the classic point-and-click MMO formula, Dragonwilds drops you into a fully 3D action world rendered in Unreal Engine 5, where you gather, build, craft, cast spells and fight alongside up to three other players. The game first launched in Early Access on 15 April 2025, and its full 1.0 release arrived on 15 September 2026, bringing console versions on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S along with full cross-play.

The world of Ashenfall

The game takes place on Ashenfall, a forgotten continent of Gielinor that longtime RuneScape fans have never visited before. Ashenfall is saturated with wild, impure anima — a raw magical energy the Elder Gods once vented out of the world. That energy warps everything it touches: trees grow leaves in impossible sunset colors, wolves sprout leafy manes, and people born under its influence can develop elemental mutations.

Geographically, the continent is divided into five major territories, each more dangerous than the last:

  • Brynmoor — the gentle southern gateway, home to Temple Woods, Bramblemead Valley and the Whispering Swamp.
  • Ghornfell — the northern wilds, containing the Fractured Plains, Bloodblight Swamp and the storm-wracked Stormtouched Highlands.
  • Fellhollow — the far north, a haunted land of undead, ruined keeps and the frozen Lake of Lost Souls.
  • Dowdun Reach — a vast mountainous delve of halls, libraries and bastions carved beneath the peaks.
  • Umbral Sands — the southern desert of oases, dunes and pyramids, added in the June 2026 update of the same name.

The deeper you travel into the continent, the stronger the anima corruption becomes — and so does everything that lives in it.

The story: dragons and the Dragon Queen

Ashenfall's dragons have awoken, and at the head of their flight stands the Dragon Queen, Kuldra. Your character arrives as part of a doomed expedition and must master survival, uncover ancient dragonkin secrets and rally what allies remain to face her. Along the way you will meet familiar RuneScape faces reimagined for this setting — the Wise Old Man, the slayer master Vannaka, the adventurer Zanik, the dwarf Doric and even Death himself — alongside new races like the lion-like Garou.

Longtime fans will also recognize quests reinterpreted through a survival lens. Dragon Slayer, Rune Mysteries, Ratcatcher, Black Knight's Fortress and dozens of other missions echo classic RuneScape content while asking you to gather, craft and build your way through them rather than simply click through dialogue.

Core gameplay loop

Dragonwilds blends four systems into one loop:

  1. Gather and skill up. Chopping trees, mining ore, fishing and cooking all level their corresponding skills — Woodcutting, Mining, Fishing, Cooking and more — RuneScape style. Your character sheet grows constantly as you play.
  2. Build a base. Construction lets you raise anything from a lean-to shelter to a fortified village. Workstations such as the Blacksmith Bench, Loom, Kiln and Rune Altar unlock deeper crafting tiers.
  3. Craft and enchant gear. Weapons and armour come in material tiers from bronze onward, and magic lets you enchant equipment with elemental effects.
  4. Delve and conquer. Hidden dragonkin vaults act as the game's dungeons — trapped facilities guarded by constructs, rats and bosses, holding the blueprints and lore you need to progress.

Magic is the signature

Unlike most survival games, magic is not an endgame luxury — it is a tool you use from minute one. Rune essence fuels a spellbook of utility and combat magic: Rocksplosion shatters ore nodes for you, Superheat smelts ore on the go, Windstep dashes you across gaps, and combat spells like Splinter and Vengeance scale into devastating crowd control. Because the world itself runs on wild anima, spellcasting feels native to Ashenfall rather than bolted on.

Solo or co-op

You can play entirely solo or in a group of up to four players, and the 1.0 release added cross-play between PC and consoles so friends can adventure together regardless of platform. enemy scaling keeps early regions approachable for a lone survivor, while vaults and bosses reward coordinated groups with division of labor — one player tanking, one casting, one supporting.

What 1.0 changed

The September 2026 full release added console platforms, cross-play, new skills (Farming, Fishing, Prayer and Agility joined the original lineup), the mountain region of Dowdun Reach and its vaults, new quests, and an expanded storyline leading to the Dragon Queen. Combined with the earlier Umbral Sands update, Dragonwilds now offers five regions, more than forty quests, twelve dragonkin vaults and a full achievement list — a complete arc from castaway to dragonslayer.

Frequently asked questions

Is RuneScape: Dragonwilds free to play? No. It is a one-time purchase (currently $29.99 on Steam) with no subscription required — a deliberate departure from the mainline RuneScape business model.

Do I need to know RuneScape to enjoy it? Not at all. The lore rewards fans with Easter eggs and familiar characters, but every story beat stands on its own for newcomers.

Can I play with friends on other platforms? Yes. The 1.0 release supports cross-play between Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

How long is the game? A focused player can reach the endgame in dozens of hours, but base building, skill grinding, vault runs and collectible hunting easily stretch it past a hundred.
