Dragonwilds Early Access Timeline — April 2025 to the 1.0 Release

The complete Early Access history of RuneScape: Dragonwilds — from the March 2025 announcement through every major update to the September 2026 full release.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds spent seventeen months in Steam Early Access before its September 2026 full release — seventeen months of region drops, system overhauls and one of the smoother early-access arcs in recent survival-game memory. This timeline walks the whole road: announcement, launch, every major update, and the numbers along the way.

The prelude (2024 – March 2025)
Jagex built Dragonwilds quietly. The project — an open-world co-op survival game in the RuneScape universe, running on Unreal Engine 5 — ran closed testing through 2024 under wraps, with players invited under NDA. The world tour reveal arrived on March 31, 2025: announcement, trailer, and an Early Access date measured in weeks.
The pitch was deliberate and, for Jagex, unfamiliar: a one-time purchase — no subscription, no microtransaction economy — set on Ashenfall, a continent of Gielinor no RuneScape game had ever visited, where dragons (led by a Dragon Queen) had awakened under a sky full of wild anima.
Early Access launch — April 15, 2025
Dragonwilds hit Steam Early Access on 15 April 2025 at $29.99 (HK$187 in the Asian pricing that made regional headlines), PC-only, with:
- The southern continent: Brynmoor's Temple Woods, Bramblemead Valley and Whispering Swamp, plus the northern wilds of Ghornfell.
- The first nine vaults of the dragonkin track and its guardian roster.
- The core skill set — Attack, Magic, Ranged, Runecrafting, Woodcutting, Mining, Cooking, Artisan, Construction — and the spellbook around the Rune Altar.
- General Velgar as the first major boss, and Queen Kuldra's shadow as the destination.
The numbers moved fast: 600,000 copies sold within two weeks, a million-plus over the following year — for a studio known for subscription MMOs, a categorical hit.
The Early Access updates (2025 – mid 2026)
The roadmap through Early Access alternated regions, systems and bosses:
- 2025 content waves — expanding the northern territories, deepening the vault track, and polishing the survival systems (hydration, rest and the gravestone economy all received passes).
- December 2025 — Update 0.10: Imaru the Soul-Eater arrived. Fellhollow's undead queen — the tragic water dragon lost to the River Noumenon — brought her tower in Hope's Fall, the curse-fragment seal, and the game's first undead-dragon duel (her guide).
- Systems maturation — through the year the team iterated toward the 1.0 shape: skill reworks, combat feel, and the groundwork for the four skills yet to come.
The Umbral Sands update — June 23, 2026
The last great Early Access content drop: the desert. A new region in the continent's far south — oases, dunes, pyramids — with power-7 vaults, the mount explosion, the glass economy and the game's first serious hydration pressure. The same update carried the localization wave: Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Latin American Spanish and Portuguese. Full coverage on the Umbral Sands page.
The 1.0 release — September 15, 2026
The full release closed the Early Access account: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions on day one, cross-play across platforms, the Dowdun Reach mountain delve, Farming, Fishing, Prayer and Agility joining the skill roster, the Scorned Wilderness opened, and the story's ending — the Dragon Gate, the Sanctum, and the five-headed Queen Kuldra waiting behind it. Full coverage on the 1.0 launch page.

What the Early Access period proved
Two things, mostly. First, that Jagex could ship a new genre: the survival-crafting conversion of a 24-year-old point-and-click universe could have been a nostalgia cash-in, and instead became a game with its own identity — magic-first survival, vault dungeons, and a dragon story with actual teeth. Second, that the one-time-purchase bet held: no subscription pivot, no economy reversal, and a full release that Early Access owners received as a promised ending rather than a new invoice.
For players deciding in the full-release era: the game you'd be buying is the one Early Access built — complete, localized, and with its road map already traveled. The getting started guide begins the trip the same way it began in April 2025: with a wrecked expedition, a wise old man, and a very long walk north.
Frequently asked questions
Was Early Access required to get the full game? No — 1.0 is the game, on every platform. Early Access purchases simply rolled forward into it.
What happened to the Early Access pricing? The launch price held through the transition — the one-time model was the design, and it survived contact with the market.
Where do future updates go now? With the 1.0 arc complete, Jagex's post-launch plans build on the full release; this page tracks the road behind, and the news hub will carry the road ahead.
