The complete guide to Dragonwilds' dragonkin vaults — all twelve dungeons, recommended progression order, power levels, traps, guardians and reward tables.

Dragonkin vaults are RuneScape: Dragonwilds' signature dungeons — ancient facilities built by the dragonkin, guarded by constructs of refined rune essence, and stuffed with the blueprints, lore and treasure that power your progression. Twelve vaults dot Ashenfall, and learning their rhythm is learning the game. This is the complete overview: every vault, the recommended order, the trap families, and what each one pays.

Every vault ends the same way: you, a guardian, and a very well-earned chest.

What vaults are and why they matter

The dragonkin Lacrussa built Ashenfall's vaults as protected repositories — traps, vermin and guardians wrapped around recipe hoards and vault cores. Mechanically they are the game's gear ladder: most of the mid and endgame's best recipes live in vault treasure chests or are taught by the dragonkin effigies inside them. The vault track also carries the story: the deeper you delve, the more of the continent's history the architecture explains.

Three rules of vaulting:

  1. Vaults appear on your map only after you discover them — exploration is part of the loot.
  2. Dying inside a vault places your gravestone at the outside entrance — dungeons don't eat your loot, but they will test your second attempt.
  3. Most vaults can be attempted out of order — the progression below is the community's efficiency route, not a hard lock.

The twelve vaults in recommended order

# Vault Power Area Signature threat
1 Crasorak Kara 2 Temple Woods Vault Overlord
2 Thishepen Kara 2 Bramblemead Valley Vault Archon
3 Vertentis Kara 2 Whispering Swamp Plague King, Rat King
4 Takla Kara 3 Fractured Plains Vault Incinerator
5 Skeklac Kara 4 Fractured Plains (Ashien's Watch) Vault Corruptor
6 Kletterbuja Kara 3 Bloodblight Swamp Plague King
7 Chaktan Kara 4 Stormtouched Highlands Vault Pyroclast
8 Kalistrakthen Kara 5 Emberwood Rat King, Vault Striker
9 Skekven Kara 5 Lake of Lost Souls (east) Skeletal hoplites, Vault Overlord
10 Vekchenven Kara 5 Lake of Lost Souls (west) Rotsworn necromancers, dragon wolves
11 Vault (Mirrors) 7 Umbral Sands pyramid Mirror guardians
12 Vault (Kalphite) 7 Umbral Sands pyramid Kalphite swarm guardians

The first ten form the standard progression; the two desert pyramids are the late-game capstones. Routes and guardian strategies per tier live in our walkthroughs: early vaults, Ghornfell vaults, and Fellhollow & Umbral vaults.

The monsters of the vaults

Two enemy families staff every vault:

  • The vermin floor — giant rats, putrid rats, rotridden rats and the occasional goblin runt. Individually trivial; in packs, the real attrition threat of any run.
  • The guardians — the dragonkin's constructs. Standard variants (archon, corruptor, hulk, sentinel, incinerator) patrol and ambush; vault bosses (overlord, pyroclast, striker) anchor the deeper halls and guard the prize rooms.

Several vaults add named spice: the Rat King holds court in Vertentis Kara and Kalistrakthen Kara, and the Plague King festers in Vertentis and Kletterbuja. Their strategies are in the vault guardians guide.

The trap families

Vaults test trap literacy as much as combat. Expect all of these, mixed and matched:

  • Fire traps — floor jets and flame vents; watch for scorch marks as telltales.
  • Spike and spear traps — pressure-plated walls and pits; walk slow, throw rocks.
  • Poison rocks — contaminated rubble that clouds when disturbed; ranged disposal preferred.
  • Exploding plants — the bio-hazard family; bait and detonate from distance.
  • Electric traps — the highlands' specialty; grounded boots of patience.

Loot: cores, shards and recipes

Every vault pays in three currencies:

  1. Vault cores — typically three per vault, placed on pillars near key progression points and claimed by interacting with the pedestal. Not drops — they're environment interactions, and missing one usually means a missed wing.
  2. Vault shards — found in chests and dropped by vault monsters; the vaults' secondary currency and crafting component.
  3. Recipes — the real prize, learned from treasure chests and dragonkin effigies. Highlights: Vertentis Kara teaches the anti-dragon shield (the desert's most important plate), and Takla Kara's chest holds the Paladin armour set plus the Wild Scout's Shortbow.

Regional bonuses spice the resource pools — Vertentis Kara carries clay nodes matching its swamp, and Takla Kara is the only source of blurite ore, the unique deposit behind some of the mid-game's best smithing.

Prep checklist for any vault run

  1. Food and water to full, plus one emergency meal.
  2. Essence stocked — Windstep for gaps, combat spells for guardian pulls, Magical Mending for oops.
  3. A claimed bed near the entrance — the gravestone respawns outside; a bed nearby makes the second attempt cheap.
  4. Ranged option — traps and rats both die easier from distance.
  5. Group roles agreed — tank, control, damage, support. Vault combat punishes four solo players in a room.

Frequently asked questions

Can vaults be repeated? Yes — cores and chests are one-time progression, but monsters, shards and resource nodes respawn, making vaults excellent repeatable farms for shards and regional materials.

What power level do I need? Match the table to your gear tier, then add one: a power 4 vault wants mid-Ghornfell kit. The first three (power 2) are tuned for fresh bronze.

Are the pyramid vaults main-story required? No — they're the late-game challenge track. The campaign can finish without them; your build will be worse for skipping them.
