Yes — that item list is a scavenger hunt on purpose: the quest makes you furnish a home, hunt, mine and smith before it lets you near a dragon. Bring the full list if you can; the quest will walk you through the rest.

Part I — To slay dragons!

Report to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village. His first lesson is disappointingly practical: before you hunt dragons, you need somewhere to sleep.

  1. Build a shelter and claim a bed roll. The quest checks for at least a foundation, three walls and a ceiling, with a bed roll placed and claimed inside. If your starter base already qualifies, just talk to him again — the check is honest, not cruel.
  2. Find the antlers. Next, the Wise Old Man needs antlers for a locator spell to find a missing adventurer — the young Cathan. Hunt deer in the valley; they flee fast, so this is a job for a ranged or magic weapon. A single antler completes the set.
  3. Follow the spell. The locator points to a castle in the valley — your next destination.

Part II — A lost adventurer at the Keep of Blue Flames

The spell leads to the Keep of Blue Flames — a castle that will look achingly familiar to RuneScape players, right down to its layout, except that Bandosian banners now fly from its towers. The garrison is goblin, the halls are hostile, and somewhere at the top waits Cathan's Journal.

Practical notes for the keep:

  • Pack food. This is a long interior fight with a lot of goblins; attrition kills more than blades do.
  • Fight in doorways. Goblins swarm; corridors turn their numbers into a queue.
  • Climb to the journal. Cathan's Journal rests at the keep's top — the story of what happened to the expedition starts there, and the quest's next thread follows it out the door.

The journal's trail leads through rat-warrens and worse — the quest sends you through rat-infested depths (giant and putrid rats both feature) and into the countryside chasing Cathan's path.

Part III — The beginnings of a legend

The middle act is Dragonwilds' checklist quest at its best: the Wise Old Man's plan to storm Velgar's tower needs supplies, and the list is the one in the table above:

  • Dragon tooth — mined from the fallen teeth of dead dragons (an iron pickaxe required). The quest marks locations of harvestable teeth.
  • Bloodwood sap — tapped from a bloodwood tree with an iron logging axe. The bleeding trees are unmistakable once you've seen one.
  • 5 bronze bars — smelted from bronze; if you built your Brynmoor base properly, you're already a bar magnate.
  • Coarse animal fur — hunting drop; anything shaggy qualifies.

With the checklist filled, the Wise Old Man reveals the target: Velgar's Rise, the old dragonkin tower now serving as the goblins' base — and the Blue Flame Door, the vault known as Vertentis Kara, figures in the path. You will go through the vault's guardians to reach him. That means the fight prep applies: our vault guardians guide covers the constructs you'll wade through.

Part IV — Fight for your life: General Velgar

At the top of Velgar's Rise waits General Velgar — the first true boss of the campaign, and the reason goblins whisper about a new Big High War God. The fight and full strategy breakdown live in our Velgar boss guide; the essentials:

  • He hits like a siege engine. Trade nothing; dodge his slams and punish the recoveries.
  • The arena has pillars and edges. Use both — line-of-sight breaks his advances and gives you free heals.
  • Ranged and magic shine. His melee reach is enormous; distance damage turns a terrifying duel into a patient execution.
  • Eat between phases, not during. His combos punish mid-bite greed; heal only on confirmed openings.

Win, and Dragon Slayer is complete — the campaign's road bends north from here, toward Ghornfell and eventually the Dragon Queen herself.

Rewards and what they unlock

Dragon Slayer pays out a serious mid-game package — gear recipes, story progress and the keys to the next quest tier — and permanently changes how goblins react to you. More importantly, it's the gateway quest for the Fellhollow arc: Withering Heights and the northern campaign assume Velgar has fallen.

Preparation checklist (condensed)

  1. Iron pickaxe and iron logging axe crafted before you start the checklist.
  2. A ranged or magic weapon for the deer and the keep's upper floors.
  3. Two full stacks of cooked food; the quest's travel alone eats a meal stack.
  4. Antipoison potions for the rat depths.
  5. A claimed bed near Bramblemead Village — death walks here are real.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fight Velgar solo? Yes — he's tuned as the first major solo-capable boss. Groups make it easier, but a patient melee with a stocked bow or spellbar wins it.

Do I need Vertentis Kara cleared first? The quest path through the Blue Flame Door handles what it needs; having the vault's routes learned makes the segment dramatically smoother.

Where do I get a dragon tooth? Marked dragon tooth deposits (mined with an iron pickaxe) — the quest reveals their locations when the checklist opens. Bring the pickaxe; the teeth don't yield to hope.
